Let’s discuss the Entrepreneurship

Arkady and Boris Strugatsky — «The Ugly Swans»

So, I have a few questions:

  1. Am I right in thinking that the “mokretsi” still exist as an entity, and that the ruined city is an allusion to how they destroyed the ordinary way of life?
  2. In the end, are the children (Irma and Bol-Kunats) an allegory for the adults’ outdated worldview?

The book proved difficult for me not because of the language, but because of its very essence, its plot. Perhaps I just haven’t grown enough yet. 🙂

Like The Doomed City, this novel differs from the authors’ earlier works. Here the story is built around the main character’s perspective, and at times shifts to a third-person view. What’s most interesting is that, both in The Doomed City and here, we witness the collapse of the current paradigm and the protagonist’s growth through all sorts of muck.

Another striking point is how the protagonist’s core beliefs change. Many people probably lack this flexibility—the ability to revise their views.

I’m not sure whether I liked the book. I’ll definitely reread it later, because I didn’t grasp everything the first time.
